How close are we to the end of the world? The Doomsday Clock, set up by \u2018The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists\u2019, is a metaphor that symbolises humanity’s proximity to catastrophe. The clock has been set to 90 seconds before midnight in early 2023, indicating that we are closer to self-destruction than ever before. As the unprecedented climate change is one of most prominent driving forces pushing the Doomsday Clock forward, we must brook no delay in averting its catastrophic impacts. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in monitoring climate change and developing carbon reduction solutions might be the new way out to reverse the Doomsday Clock.<\/p>

For instance, utilising AI to trace carbon footprints can help pave the way for a sustainable value chain; improving the speed and accuracy of weather forecasts with AI can help us act promptly in cases of extreme weather; tracking and monitoring endangered species in the wild using AI can help us make timely and targeted interventions in conserving nature and biodiversity. With creativity and innovation, we can harness the potential of AI, bringing hope for a sustainable future.<\/p>

To enhance students’ understanding on AI and climate change, Hong Kong Education City (EdCity) and Microsoft jointly organise ‘Master Code 2022\/23’ Competition with the theme \u2018Envisage the Climate Blueprint with AI\u2019. Students are encouraged to apply their programming skills creatively, design a practical strategy or solution for a sustainable climate blueprint.
